LEARN WHAT HAPPENS AFTER TRACTION RUNS OUT
Sand changes everything.
Momentum matters. Throttle matters. Tire pressure matters. The line that worked ten seconds ago may not work on the next dune.
The Sand Lake Dune Experience puts those lessons into practice in an environment where getting stuck isn't necessarily a mistake — sometimes it's part of the exercise.
Over the weekend, the Grand Exploration team will work with participants on dune driving, vehicle control, recovery techniques, communication, and reading terrain before putting those skills to work across Sand Lake's dunes.
Expect sand.
Expect recoveries.
Expect to get stuck.
That's the point.
VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS
This event is intended for capable AWD and 4WD vehicles suitable for driving in deep sand.
Vehicles should arrive mechanically sound and ready for off-pavement use.
Participants should have:
• Appropriate tires in good condition
• A usable recovery point
• A full-size spare or appropriate tire-repair solution
• Basic personal recovery equipment where available
• A radio compatible with the communication plan provided for the event
Grand Exploration will provide additional recovery capability and instruction during the event.
Exact meeting/camp coordinates and final participant communications can be supplied separately once operational details are finalized.
WHAT TO EXPECT
This is not a convoy following a guide around established roads all weekend.
Sand Lake gives us room to work on vehicle behavior in loose terrain and then immediately put those lessons into practice.
Participants will learn and practice concepts including:
• Airing down and understanding how tire pressure changes flotation and traction
• Momentum management in deep sand
• Throttle control
• Reading dunes and terrain
• Choosing and adjusting lines
• Vehicle spacing and communication
• Safe recovery procedures
• Winch and recovery-equipment fundamentals
• Understanding when to stop digging and start recovering
• Working as a group when vehicles inevitably get stuck
The goal isn't to avoid every recovery.
The goal is to understand why the vehicle got stuck, how to recover it safely, and what to change the next time.
WHAT TO BRING
Participants should plan for a full weekend outdoors on the Oregon Coast.
Bring:
• Weather-appropriate clothing
• Rain gear
• Closed-toe footwear suitable for working around vehicles
• Water
• Personal snacks
• Camping equipment
• Personal medications and necessities
• Vehicle recovery equipment you already own
• GMRS Radio - if you do not have one, please let us know and we may be able to provide a loaner
• Oregon OHV permit/proof of purchase
Coastal weather can change quickly, so participants should be prepared for wet, windy, cool, or sunny conditions.
ITINERARY
FRIDAY — ARRIVAL + CAMP
Participants arrive at Sand Lake and meet the Grand Exploration team.
We'll get everyone oriented, establish camp, get vehicles situated, and make sure everyone is ready for the weekend.
After dinner, conditions permitting, we'll head onto the dunes for an introductory sunset drive.
This is intentionally a lower-pressure first session: get familiar with the sand, get comfortable with vehicle behavior, and get a feel for the terrain before the structured training begins Saturday.
SATURDAY — RECOVERY + DUNES
10:00 AM — Recovery Clinic
Saturday begins with a hands-on recovery and winching session.
We'll cover recovery equipment, attachment points, communication, vehicle positioning, basic winch operation, and how to approach recoveries safely before putting those skills to use in the dunes.
Then we drive.
The rest of the day is about applying those concepts in actual terrain: reading dunes, choosing lines, managing momentum, getting stuck, recovering vehicles, and learning how different vehicles respond to deep sand.
The Grand Exploration team will coach participants throughout the day rather than simply leading a predetermined route.
SUNDAY — DUNE SESSION + WRAP-UP
Sunday gives participants another opportunity to put the weekend's lessons together with additional time in the dunes.
We'll continue working on terrain reading, vehicle control, communication, and recovery as needed while allowing participants to build confidence with their vehicles.
We'll wrap up the event and give everyone time to air back up, pack out, and prepare for the drive home.
MEETING / COMMUNICATION
The initial meetup will be around the main Sand Lake parking / air-down area.
Final meeting instructions and exact camp coordinates will be communicated separately once finalized.
Cell service in the area can be unreliable.
Radio communication is therefore an important part of the event and participants should arrive prepared to use the designated radio channel communicated by Grand Exploration.
OREGON OHV PERMIT
Every participating vehicle needs the applicable Oregon OHV / ATV Operating Permit required for use in the Sand Lake OHV area.
Permits cost $10 and last two years. Washington permits aren't accepted. Online purchases include a temporary permit valid for 30 days.
